This is the first time an iTel smartphone visited our test lab, the iTel 1516 Plus review shows that iTel has come a long way. iTel used to have a very negative reception, the smartphone maker has been doing a lot of things to change that and they have come up with the iTel 1516 Plus.
I was surprised by the design which looks really great by a large margin. This is further complimented by its large mega battery, a 5000mAh rated battery!!! The reason why it is a super monster is simply because it is on a 5-inch LCD display that doesn’t consume battery.
The larger the display and the more pixels you have, the faster your battery get drained. So, the iTel 1516 Plus has its biggest selling point on the battery capacity, shooing for other areas that don’t have the edge.
Before we talk about the iTel 1516 Plus review, let’s see what we have in the box.
Here is the iTel 1516 Plus specifications
iTel 1516 Plus Review: Unboxing
The mid-rage smartphone comes with a normal box, the smartphone sits just on-top of it. Removing the phone, you see the micro-USB cable, charger, earpiece, OTG adapter and pouch. Nothing special in the box, just the traditional packing with a manual.
iTel 1516 Plus Review: Design, Camera and Software
The smartphone has a curve edged design language, built with small bit of plastic shell and metal casing, it is a power beast with a non-removable 5000mAh battery.
It has a large bezels which is not what I love to see in any smartphone, the 2MP front facing camera and soft flash is located just above the display.
The display is only 480 x 854 in resolution with a pixel density of 195 pixel density. Outside that, you will find the volume rocker and power button at the right frame of the smartphone.
The headphone socket is located at the top and at the bottom, you will also find the micro-USB port.
At the back of the smartphone, you find the 8MP primary camera with dual LED flash and speaker grill just at the bottom.
Talking about the software, the iTel 1516 Plus comes with Android 5.1 out of the box. I do not know if this can be updated over-the-air but they are a couple of preloaded apps, bloatwares that takes more than half of the 8GB internal memory available on the smartphone.
The 1GB RAM iTel 1516 smartphone stylish runs the smartphone that feels pretty cool on the hand. I didn’t do any benchmarking test for the smartphone, since the device isn’t targeted at power users.
So any benchmarking score will really make no sense, but it can still run a couple of multiple applications before you start to notice any form of lag. Don’t try to upgrade the memory above 32GB, the 1.2GHz MediaTek processor won’t be able to handle it.
For guys who will be looking for a cheap 4G LTE smartphone, this will not appeal to you as there are no 4G LTE modem on the smartphone. Rather, you will get 3G, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, USB 3.0, accelerator and proximity sensor as it connectivity standard.
iTel 1516 Plus Review: Battery & Pricing
The battery is super impressive riding on the fact that it comes with fast charge technology and OTG support.
For the pricing, the company says it has a recommended retail price of N24,500. You may get this device above this price due to certain factors but judging from what it has to offer, it looks like this is going to be a steal, mainly for folks who don’t give a hoot about smartphone power!
