The Mobile World Congress has come and gone but left in the souls of tech enthusiasts some amazing piece of information to marvel about. Lots of ground-breaking announcements and some epic revelations like the Smart Gear 2 by Samsung, the world’s fastest MiFi by Huawei as well as Nokia’s driod smartphones but it’s the jaw breaking revelation of Samsung Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 that made the entire event a memorable one.
Both Samsung and Sony will dig it out this year as both companies will engage in a battle to attract mobile users to their camps. They have both showed what their next hotly anticipated smartphones can offer and we set out to tear down their specifications.
Design
Samsung Galaxy S5 and Xperia z2 differ distinctively in their exterior designs. The Xperia Z2 follows the same pattern of its predecessor, having a unibody design with all ports and slots covered. The battery is also sealed; the device has an IP58 certification meaning it can stay in water (5.ft) up to 60 mins.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 offers a perforated plastic casing with aluminum at the edge. It features a removable battery despite being certified with IP57 certification that confirms its waterproof timeframe to be around 30 mins in a 3ft. water body. The Galaxy S5 will come in multiple colors variant – black, white, blue and gold.
It was speculated that the Galaxy S5 will look and feel different from the GS4, but the reality makes fun of the source as there is no distinctive upgrade from the GS4 on a design perspective. The Xperia Z2 didn’t have a massive leap either, but there is a slight improvement upon the Xperia Z1. Xperia Z2 measures 8.2mm thickness as against 8.5 for the Xperia Z1 while the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S4 maintain the same 8.1mm thickness.
Display
There is no much difference between the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 in terms of display. The Xperia z2 is slightly larger than the Galaxy S5 with a 5.2-inch HD1080p, backed by a pixel density of 424ppi. Galaxy S5 shows slight superiority with its pixel density of 432ppi on a 5.1-inch HD180P display.
Xperia X2 utilizes Sony Triluminos display technology while the Galaxy S5 makes use of the highly rated Super AMOLED screen technology. Processor and Memory
Just like the display, the Xperia z2 and Galaxy S5 are no worlds-apart as they have similar processing performance. Samsung and Sony utilized the Qualcomm’s 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor on their next flagship smartphones but it’s the Xperia Z2 which shows slight superiority in this department, offering a 3 GB RAM as against 2 GB RAM available on the Galaxy S5.
Interface
The Galaxy S5 uses Samsung’s new TuchWiz UI on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. There are a lot of new features introduced, like the Private or Kids modes, My Magazine, Health 3.0 and round icons. The menu has also been reworked to allow user interact better with the phone. Amongst other things introduced are a new chipset and a sensor that makes using the phone with a compelling experience without a doubt.
Xperia Z2 also comes with its own custom UI carefully crafted on top of Android 4.4 KitKat. It is bundled with enormous functionality like the Smart Call and DoubleTap. The phone is preloaded with PlayStation Companion apps and Sony’s Walkman with noise cancellation technology.
Cameras
The Samsung Galaxy S5 camera is a massive improvement over its predecessor; it features a 16 MP camera at the rare which offers an LED flash, HDR, Smile detection, autofocus and is capable of shooting videos at 4k resolution.
Xperia Z2 edges the Galaxy S5 in the camera department by featuring a 20.7 MP rare facing camera, similar to what’s available on the Xperia Z1. The talking point for the Xperia Z2 over the Xperia Z1 is it’s ability to shot 4k resolution videos, just like the Galaxy S5. It also comes with on-board features such as HDR, panorama mode and image stabilization.
Storage
Xperia Z2 falls flat to what the Galaxy S5 offers as storage capacity. 16 GB and 32 GB models of Galaxy S5 would be available and can be expanded further to 128 GB. Sony is making only one model of the Xperia Z2 and it’s a 16 GB model, featuring an on board microSD card slot that can be expanded up to 64 GB.
Battery
Both smartphones show significant improvement over their predecessors, the Xperia Z2 comes with a 3,200mAh battery and should last for 19-hours, while the Galaxy S5 features a 2,800mAh battery which can offer 21 hours talk time according to Samsung.
Verdict
The Xperia Z2 is a beauty and then a beast. It’s looks like a premium smartphone when place in comparison with the Galaxy S5. It is better placed in Camera, RAM coupled with a better waterproof resistance capacity. The bigger screen and the unibody design makes it a decent phone. That is not to say the Galaxy S5 has no bragging rights, two unique features of the Galaxy S5 includes the Fingerprinting technology and the heart rate sensor which makes Samsung flagship device a complete monster.
Both smartphone are capable of shooting 4k resolution videos and both have decent processing power. They both look similar and one cannot easily take one for the other as the both offer incredible value.
